2017 Honda Accord EX-L Hybrid Overview

I wanted to call this a review but I didn't really comment on how much I liked or didn't like anything about the car so, here's the 2017 Honda Accord EX-L Hybrid overview.

Psst, don't get the touring edition unless you're just a huge fan of cool headlights.  You can get full navigation using Android Auto or Apple CarPlay for free and save $3,000.

Google's annual 3 day tech conference called Google I/O started today and here are some things of note from day 1.

Google wants your help naming Android N

At  Google I/O conference today, one of the presenters expressed how difficult it was to continually come up with dessert names for their Android operating system.  Well, now they asked for your input. If you head over to you will be able to provide your suggestions for the official name of Android N.

Past names have been sweet treats like Jelly Bean, KitKat, Lollipop and Marshmallow so think of something sweet and you might have a chance.

Nachos, Nougat, Nerds, Nestle, Nuts, something along those lines might work.

In somewhat surprising news Google released the developer version of Android N well before Google I/O which is scheduled to May.  In addition to releasing Android N, Google allows people to registers as developers and get 25% off on the Pixel C so you can test your apps.

You can get instructions how to dowload Android N for a supported device here.

With the discount you can get a Pixel C with keyboard for around $540 depending on taxes.  Previously the same combination would have cost you almost $700.

Google's Project Fi is now invite free

A while back I told you how Google was changing the MVNO game with a service called Project Fi.  Fi is an MVNO which is a mobile carrier that uses another carrier's network.

MVNO's tend to be cheaper because they use the network infrastructure of the big 4 (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint) have built and maintain.  This reduces costs and those savings are passed on to customers.

Signing up for Project Fi used to be by invite only (it required you to sign up on the Fi website and wait a week or two to get approved) but now the invite part is gone.

Introducing the Amazon Tap

Amazon introduced the Tap which is essentially a portable Amazon Echo.  It has all of the same voice command features of the Echo, but has a 9 hour battery life.

Meet the Amazon echo dot

Amazon came out with the connected Echo speaker last year and it's meant to be a hub for your home similar to asking Siri or OK Google on your phone.  You can ask it for your schedule, the weather, turn off or on lights or even to play some music and it can respond to your requests with the built in speaker.  The only drawback is that it costs $179 which is a lot for a BT speaker if you don't factor in the voice command and home automation details.

Now, Amazon has come out with a way to get all of the features of the Echo without the cost of an Echo and it's called the echo dot for $89.

Apple vs the FBI and what you need to know

As many people may know, Apple is in a battle of security versus privacy with the FBI over the San Bernardino shooters locked iPhone 5c.

While I won't claim to be a legal expert by any means, I will attempt to break down what's happening with this case and why it should matter to you.

This is going to be a long post but bare with me...

Social engineering hack

If you've ever wanted to know how 90% of all companies and people get hacked, watch this video.  You can start at the 37:50 mark, but Leo Laporte will explain how social engineering was used to hack a guy who asked people to hack him.  He thought he was secure and smart and it couldn't be done and the simplest techniques took him down and gave hackers FULL CONTROL of his computer.

iPhones have always been regarded as having great cameras. Microsoft's Lumia phones are almost always considered the best and the iPhone and Samsung Galaxy line are usually 2nd or 3rd depending on who's writing the review.  Apple CEO Tim Cook did iPhone camera’s and extreme disservice while attending Super Bowl 50 last night by posting this tweet.

Microsoft wins and loses during the AFC championship game

Microsoft inked a partnership deal with the NFL before last season that would have Microsoft Surface tablets replace paper printouts that NFL teams used to analyze pre-snap formations.  Last year Microsoft had trouble getting TV crews to actually call them Surface tablets and constantly referred to them as "iPads".  This year during the New England Patriots vs Denver Broncos AFC Championship game, Microsoft took another hit.

Google pays Apple $1 billion to keep its search bar on the iPhone

In an unsurprising move Google paid Apple $1 billion to remain the main search provider on iOS devices.  I say unsurprising because Google reportedly paid Apple a similar amount a few years ago for the same privilege.

Whatsapp drops its $1 yearly fee

Whatsapp  announced they will drop their yearly $1 fee to use their mobile chat service.  Whatsapp is one of the more popular mobile chat clients for iPhone, Android, Windows Phone and BlackBerry that was purchased by FaceBook two years ago for $19 billion.  Since then, Facebook hasn't done much to integrate the chat service into its own FaceBook Messenger but rather let the app continue as a stand alone chat client.
