Best and worst in tech for 2014

With 2014 coming to a close, I'd like to recap the year with the best and worst in tech from the past year.  New tech trends came into focus during the past year as wearable tech has become a real thing and the mobile phone race is and probably will continue to be only a two horse race.  This trend will continue into next year as Android and iOS should continue to dominate the mobile market and everyone in the tech world has released or announced a wearable device.

Tech companies finally taking a stand against Apple

Apple is known to be a marketing genius, and it's about time tech companies took a stand and stopped vying for second place

Google and Apple are both well known juggernauts who own a majority of the mobile market (something north of 90% of market share combined) and they've had a well publicized battle for years.  Microsoft has been known to fight for mobile market share for the last few years and has yet to crack the 4% barrier.  Now it seems that more companies are finally fighting back and not allowing themselves to get bullied by Apple anymore.

Downloading and installing iOS 8 might be a problem

iOS 8 is available for download but it might be hard to get for many iOS users.  I have an original iPad Mini and I tried to download iOS 8 but couldn't because I didn't have 4.7GB of free storage on my iPad.

Samsung's somewhat funny comeback for the iPhone 6 and Apple Watch

Samsung posted a few videos to their youtube page to mock the Apple announcement for the iPhone 6 and Apple watch.  Some are funny, but only if know what they are talking about.  Only tech nerds watched the live stream so very few people will understand that one.

Watch and enjoy!

Apple claims 18 versions, but are there more?

Apple had their announcement of the Apple Watch today and if you go to their website, they have 18 versions of the watch listed.  (Yes, 18 versions)  But are there actually more than 18 versions?

This is why the Apple Watch is going to be too expensive

Apple announced their Apple Watch brand of smart watches today and they are going to come to market in early 2015 for the low price of $350.  At $350 the Apple Watch is anywhere from $100-$150 more expensive than Android Wear counterparts.  Granted $350 is not expensive for a fine timepiece, but smart watches aren't fine timepieces.

Apple Watch has been announced

It's square with rounded corners with a flexible screen.  Also, it has a scroll wheel that will allow you to zoom and press it to select and a button below that for instant access to your contacts.  I'd have to say that it looks good even if it may be a tad thick.  It will use NFC to will interact with other Apple Watches near by.  It also has wireless charging and a heart rate sensor.

iPhone 6 has announcement has been ruined

I can't read or write Mandarin or Cantonese, but someone in China just leaked the official iPhone 6.  Apple's announcement of the iPhone 6 is supposed to be on September 9th, but someone in China beat Apple to the punch.

The Smart Watch you were waiting for, but you should probably just keep on waiting

I purchased a LG G watch a while back so I could explore Android Wear as it grows from its infancy.  I know it's not the prettiest Android Wear watch, but frankly, there aren't many smart watches that are really attractive.  The Moto 360 on the other hand, is an attractive watch.  It took an extra 2 months to come to market and now that it's available for $249, it probably wasn't worth the wait.

Android Wear on the LG G Watch One month later...

I purchased an LG G Watch running Android Gear so I could be on the front edge of wearable tech and be able to speak intelligently about Android smart watches.  After a month of wearing this watch almost daily I wanted to document my thoughts.

A week with a Chromebook as my only computer

I purchased a Acer C720P Chromebook a while ago just for fun and I finally got to test it out as my only computer for a week.  Since I’m a major tech geek, I knew going into it, there would be limitations on what I could do but I wanted to see if I could manage anyway.  I had 12 free GoGo inflight wifi sessions to use as well.  Here are my thoughts about Chromebooks and how they can fit into my life and the lives of everyday people.

Facebook Messenger is coming to Windows Phone [Updated]

Facebook Messenger is already pretty well integrated into the messaging app on Windows Phone (WP) but now a stand alone app for Facebook Messenger has been announced.
